Start with the attic you have
An attic upgrade starts with access, the existing insulation, the roof condition and the location of mechanical equipment. Tell us whether you are renovating, building an addition or addressing uncomfortable rooms. Photographs can explain the layout, but the final scope needs to identify the surfaces receiving foam and the condition of the assembly.
Roof-deck insulation is a building decision
Insulating beneath a roof deck differs from insulating the ceiling below an attic. Moving the enclosure boundary requires coordination of ventilation, humidity control and any equipment inside that enclosure. Request an explanation of how the proposed installation fits your home. Simply applying foam does not automatically make the attic a conditioned room.
Compare the foam specification
Discuss open-cell foam and closed-cell foam against the available depth and the requirements of the assembly. The estimate should state the selected product, thickness or performance, coverage and any protective layers. This attic service page covers spray foam installation; other insulation materials are not included by assumption.
Existing insulation and preparation
Ask whether existing material remains, whether removal is required and how that decision relates to the new assembly. When removal is included, identify areas, handling and disposal. Our insulation removal planning page explains the questions to settle before replacement. Address known roof leaks and repairs before insulation is installed.
Plan access, protection and re-entry
Explain where the attic hatch is, what is beneath it, and which belongings or equipment obstruct access. Confirm who handles moving and protection, and discuss ventilation and manufacturer-specific re-entry instructions for occupants and pets. There is no single return time appropriate to every foam product and installation.
What changes the installation price?
The spray area can differ substantially from the home’s floor area. Roof shape, gable ends, thickness, access, removal and any specified coatings can affect the scope. Compare these items in your insulation cost planning guide before choosing between proposals.
Is insulation the reason a room is hot?
Insulation is one possible factor. Ductwork, equipment, air leakage and solar exposure may also affect comfort. Describe the problem rather than asking for a thickness alone. For work across several assemblies, explore existing-home insulation upgrades.
