Compare the same scope before comparing the price
A useful insulation price describes a particular building and installation. Two totals are not comparable if one includes removal and a protective layer while another covers only foam application. Start with the surfaces, product and installed thickness before looking at the total.
Floor area is not always the installation area
The roof deck, wall surfaces and gable ends may add up differently from the floor plan. Ask which areas were measured and which were excluded. For foam, a board foot represents one square foot of coverage at one inch of thickness; that measurement alone still does not include every part of a project price.
Six items to compare in each estimate
Ask for coverage by assembly; product and thickness or performance; existing-material removal and disposal; access and protection; any specified coating or barrier; and cleanup, exclusions and scheduling. A proposed material change should come with a revised scope, not just a lower total.
Attic upgrade or new construction?
